With its beachy setting, sunny golden lighting, and pastel wardrobe, Palm Royale makes for great springtime TV. Even if the temperatures aren’t rising as fast as we’d like them to, in this Apple TV+ comedy, the weather’s nice and warm. The socialites, on the other hand? Not so much.
Revolving around a Palm Beach social club in 1969, the series stars Kristen Wiig as Maxine, a social climber trying to infiltrate and impress the town’s most exclusive social circles. She has her sights set on a specific group of wealthy women, who exert their dominance through charity events, gossip, and designer clothing. They are also completely out of touch with the growing women’s movement outside their bubble. They resist Maxine’s presence, but she perseveres with her “relentless positivity,” Wiig told ELLE.com.
“Even if she’s saying something that’s either unkind or sad or whatever, she still says it with this bubbly sunshine energy,” she added. “And I think she almost has to, because if there’s a crack in that, then I think her vulnerability and her pain and insecurity would come out. So I think there’s a lot of, ‘Keep it together, Maxine.’ And it looks exhausting because she’s just going, going, going.”
