Britney Spears Writes That Refusing to Make Music Was a Way to Hurt Her Family

Culture

On Monday, pop icon Britney Spears shared on Instagram that her hiatus from making new music was actually her way of striking back at her family, who she feels betrayed her during her 13-year conservatorship. Spears’s money and movements were placed under the control of her father, Jamie Spears, during that time. She has frequently expressed anger and resentment towards other members of her family on social media for their lack of support.

In this post, Spears wrote about the power of prayer and how there was a certain point in her life where she lost her faith in god. She then said she’d been prevented from doing new music or even performing remixes of her old, and that created a lot confusion for her around creativity.

“Not doing music anymore is my way of saying ‘F–k You’ in a sense when it only actually benefits my family by ignoring my real work….It’s like I’ve subconsciously let them win.”

She was particularly frustrated to see her younger sister, Jamie Lynn Spears, perform a medley of Britney’s work with Hailee Steinfeld, Sofia Carson and Kelsea Ballerini at the 2017 Radio Disney Music Awards.

“It didn’t make sense how network television shows are showcasing my music with remixes of all of my music … yet the person who owns the music is told no!!!!” she wrote. “They even gave remixes to my sister but I was always told no?”

She continued, “I asked for 13 years to perform new songs and remixes of my old songs … I had two months off in between each show setting for four years in Vegas … and every time I asked I was told, ‘No…’ !!!!”

The post insinuates that much of what she suffers hasn’t been shared yet. She claimed that “people have no idea the awful things that have been done to me personally” and these experiences have made her “scared of people and the business!!!!”

As soon as her conservatorship ended, people were wondering if Spears would begin to make new music and a source told Page Six that she was “excited” to start, but it wasn’t a “top priority.”
