Zendaya Recreated Beyoncé’s 2003 Versace Look at the BET Awards

Law Roach and Zendaya served up a big fashion moment and a Beyoncé tribute at last night’s BET Awards, with Roach dressing the Euphoria actress in a 2003 Versace dress. It wasn’t just any Versace dress: It was the same purple and lime green cutout look that Beyoncé wore to the 2003 BET Awards where she performed “Crazy in Love” for the first time. Bey wore a shorter version of the dress while Zendaya went for a longer one.

Zendaya accessorized with Stuart Weitzman shoes and yellow Bulgari diamonds. “Paying homage to the Queen Beyoncé wearing @versace SS2003 ….. get you a stylist with a ARCHIVE!!!!” Roach captioned his first Instagram of Zendaya in the look.

Zendaya devoted three Instagram grid posts to the outfit. “Crazy in love,” she captioned the first, alluding to Beyoncé. Roach also shared a post with footage of Beyoncé performing “Crazy in Love” along with video of the long and short versions of the dress debuting on the Versace spring/summer 2003 runway. “It was only right….” he captioned it.

In February, Roach spoke to ELLE.com about what it was like dressing Zendaya for a red carpet versus dressing her for her Netflix film Malcom & Marie. “I think there are some similarities. It’s still Zendaya’s body. It’s still Zendaya’s physicality, which is beautiful,” he started. “When we do things together, we always create a narrative or a character. There has to be a story behind why the clothes are chosen. Who is she at that moment? It’s always been my job to create that narrative, to bring the pieces to the story. Then she takes them and becomes whoever it is and evokes whatever emotion we decided on. I put that into designing for Marie, too.
