Netflix renewed Gentefied three months after season 1 premiered.

The series was renewed for a second season on May 18, three months after its February 21 debut on Netflix. Season 2 will feature eight half-hour episodes, two less than the first season. The bilingual series, based on the 2017 Sundance web series, follows the lives of three Mexican-American cousins—Ana (Karrie Martin), Erik (J.J. Soria), and Chris (Carlos Santos). They navigate the gentefication (gentrification of Latinx neighborhoods by Latinx people) of their neighborhood while working at their family taco shop and caring for their abuelo Pop (Joaquin Cosío).

Lemus and Chávez executive produce Gentefied with Ferrera, Charles D. King (Mudbound), Teri Weinberg (Ugly Betty), Kim Roth (Inside Man), and Aaliyah Williams (Gente-fied: The Digital Series).

You can watch the cast virtually read an episode from season 2.

Days after Netflix confirmed season 2, Gentefied‘s cast and creators reunited for a live virtual table read of a season 2 episode. Hosted by George Lopez, the event premiered on Netflix’s YouTube channel on May 20 and raised awareness for Proyecto Pastoral, a Boyle Heights non-profit addressing the impact of COVID-19 on low-income residents within the community. You can watch the entire episode here.

The season finale ended on several cliffhangers.

When the full second season of Gentefied debuts, there will be a lot of explaining to do. At the end of last season, Pop is arrested for an outstanding fine from a months-old vandalism charge. An undocumented immigrant, Pop is taken away by ICE without the Morales family’s knowledge. Meanwhile, Erik and Lidia (Annie Gonzalez) contemplate moving to Palo Alto, and Chris’s father offers to pay for his culinary school. Plus, the entire future of Mama Fina’s hangs in the balance after art aficionado Vivian (Alanna Ubach) buys the taco shop and plans to transform it into a “theme pop-up food experience.”
