Today, Prince Harry headed to the iconic Abbey Road Studios in London for a very special task: recording a live session with Jon Bon Jovi and the Invictus Games Choir. For this year’s Invictus Games, the sporting competition for wounded military personnel founded by the Duke of Sussex in 2014, Bon Jovi is recording a new version of his 2019 single “Unbroken,” which he wrote to shine a spotlight on veterans living with Post Traumatic Stress Injury (PTSI). Honouring their service and acknowledging their strength, the song will be released in March in support of the Invictus Games Foundation.
According to the official Sussex Royal Instagram account, “the Invictus Games Choir, made up of wounded, injured and sick veterans and serving personnel from all services and different ranks of the UK Armed Forces, have come together to use the power of music to aid their recovery.” Although Prince Harry was supposed to join Bon Jovi and the Choir to sing this special song, he seemed visibly nervous in a teaser of their recording session released on Instagram. Bon Jovi shared some words of encouragement— “It’s gonna be really easy, just pretend you’re singing in your bedroom” —but Prince Harry eventually decided to “leave the vocals to the professionals.”
The special single was recorded in Studio 2 where The Beatles recorded 11 out of their 13 albums, so of course the Duke and Bon Jovi paused for a photo op on the historic crosswalk that the Brit band made famous on the cover of their 1969 Abbey Road album.
The stop is part of Prince Harry’s final round of engagements before he and Meghan step back from royal duties, splitting their time between the UK and Canada. In regards to the recent developments concerning the Sussexes’ decision to step back from royal life, Bon Jovi told The Guardian: “I don’t know what it’s like to walk in his shoes, and as an American I am further removed, but I have immense respect for the family, for his brother, himself, his wife, father, grandmother – we have immense respect for them in America.”
