Is the Peloton Tread Worth the Money?

Life & Love

Stepping onto the Peloton Tread for the first time is like stepping onto a spaceship—it’s roomy, bright, and futuristic. In front of you is a massive 32-inch HD touch screen that displays live classes where you can virtually give your classmates high-fives and compete for ranks. So, a friendly-yet-competitive spaceship.

Plagued by an acute case of indecision, I spent a few minutes scrolling through the different class options; was I in the mood for something intense like “bootcamp”, should I start off slow with stretching, dive into circuit training, or work on my endurance? For my first try, I settled on the ten-minute running warm-up. As soon as I selected the class, an instructor took her place front and center, and after a two-minute spiel of what the course entailed, I hit the ground running (literally). I thought the treadmill would start going on its own, but the instructor told me to turn up the speed to 4.0mph and incline to 1 for an easy jog to start, which I did with the sleek dials that are located on the rails to my right and left. I expected the speed to automatically change as the class did, but was relieved when I realized it was still in my control.

One of the worst parts of being in a gym or taking a public class is the self-conscious fear of people judging you. But on the Tread, in the privacy of your own home, there are no screen peekers insight. Although, your overall effort put into the course does get calculated and put into ranks which displays live on a leaderboard for other runners to see. So if competition is your motivation (like me) this will still fuel a little fire beneath your belly.

Something I always hate when running on a treadmill is what to do with my eyes. I will stare at random things in the gym, maybe turn on the TV, but it can get distracting. One of the most significant additions to the Tread is the virtual scenic outdoor routes you can choose to run on. They have beautiful locations where you feel like you’re actually running in the mountains or on a beach that’s captured by amazing camera quality.

Continuing with my jog, I noticed something right away that most treadmills don’t have which is the comfort of the tracks. It’s so easy to jog on with its slatted running surface, giving you support every time your foot hits down on the rubber tracks, which is extremely important since treadmills can cause problems in joints. Because the slats roll instead of slide, there’s no shaking of the machine when you’re sprinting so no need to get embarrassed or even scared of flying off.

I finished the class, sweat and all, and felt great. Sweating in the comfort of my own home is definitely something I can get used to. Overall, working out with instructors on a screen in front of you is game-changing. It’s like having a class in your living room without having to drag yourself out of the house. Plus, if you’re not physically with your Tread, you can use your Peloton subscription to access plenty of other classes to do anywhere.

The Peloton Tread lets you virtually escape life’s difficulties to get to the true core of your exercise. It’s comfortable, easy, and the technology behind it surpasses any workout machine on the market. While the price might make you think you’re buying an actual spaceship, in the long run it’ll save you money on classes, membership fees, and time you’d otherwise spend schlepping to and from the gym. And hey, if we’re not splurging on our health what are we really living for?
