To celebrate the social enterprise bakery’s second location opening

Today, Sussex Royal shared a heartwarming video of a beaming Meghan Markle visiting Luminary Bakery in Camden, London earlier this week.

The bakery is an organization close to the Duchess’ heart, having met with the team earlier this year and then choosing to feature the business in her #ForcesForChange issue of British Vogue. It provides employment opportunities for women “from vulnerable circumstances (be it abuse, poverty, trafficking, marginalization) and equips them with the job skills and confidence to succeed,” Sussex Royal explained on Instagram. The caption added that the visit was “a special moment to acknowledge the spirit of Luminary and their remarkable business model.” Today’s visit was the celebrate the opening of the bakery’s second location which will allow them to help four times as many women than before.

During her visit, the Duchess (wearing a blue and white striped shirt from With Nothing Underneath, blue jeans, a Madewell belt and Adidas sneakers) met with some of the employees as they attended workshops and baked cakes. At one point in the clip, Meghan is handed an apron which she happily puts on, before also being given personalized treats that she shows to the camera. She is also shown sitting down at a table with a group of women as they write messages on note cards.

During a chat with one of the women employed by the bakery, Meghan said, “We get into this habit of wanting things done immediately nowadays. There’s a culture of instant gratification, of the instant fix. But we aren’t mechanical objects that need to be fixed. You’re a wounded creature that needs to be healed, and that takes time.” At another point, she added, “Our lives may be different, our backgrounds, our experiences, all varied, but I find that in these moments of connection it becomes abundantly clear that our hopes, our fears, our insecurities, the things that make us tick…. well, those are very much the same. And there’s comfort in that.”

Food and female empowerment are two important causes for the Duchess, and the opportunity to combine the two was clearly joyous for the royal. The post on Instagram finished with an encouragement for followers to visit either of the bakery’s two locations. “Luminary Bakery – a sustainable grassroots organization in the heart of London – is a beautiful example of community and uplifting those during hardship for the greater good. If you find yourself in the area, please visit and support the women of Luminary Bakery to enjoy their delicious baked goods and to see the impactful work they’re doing.”
