Jojo Siwa is in the midst of a bedazzled rebrand. Over the past few weeks, the internet has reveled in every cringe moment, bouncing from think pieces about Siwa’s Disney-villain-esque aesthetic to critiques of her self-designated title as the mastermind behind “gay pop.” But while the former “Dance Moms” star continues to publicly navigate the sticky transition from child-bow mogul to serious adult musician, she’s also had to face disappointing opinions about her body.

“The worst is when someone’s like, ‘She looks like she’s gained weight,’ and I’m like, ‘Shit, it’s noticeable,'” Siwa said on Ryan and Meghan Trainor’s podcast, “Workin’ on It.”

Some criticism is to be expected for a former child star with such a massive following, but commenting on a person’s body — no matter their level of celebrity — is different from any valid critique about their creative direction and is just unnecessary, not to mention harmful. This feels especially true for someone like Siwa, who grew up in the dance world, where body image is such a major point of focus. “I have had to learn that I am not little, I am strong,” Siwa said on the podcast. “I’m meaty. I ain’t ashamed of it anymore.”

“I am not little, I am strong.”

Siwa added that as her life changed, so did her body — a fact that should be normalized rather than picked apart on social media. “I went through a phase post-‘Dancing With the Stars’ where I was little,” she said, referring to her participation in 2021. Although she normally wears a size six, Siwa said that after the show, she was closer to a size zero. “Afterwards, I went on tour, so [I stayed] that size, then came back, and of course I [was] going to gain weight.”

The explanation makes sense. In fact, the only real surprise is that people felt comfortable commenting on how a then-18-year-old’s body changed over the years. “Now I look back at that, and I’m back in my [size] six, back in my sometimes-eights, and living my life, feeling fine, but I’m like, ‘Shit, how did I look like that?'” Siwa said. “And then I’m like, ‘But think about how weak you were.'”

Luckily, she’s learning to prioritize strength over appearance and turning this outward attention into something positive: “Now, I can partner with girls, and I can chuck them over my head with one hand,” Siwa said.

If nothing else, Siwa’s candor offers a refreshing glimpse behind her glittery facade. You don’t have to love her new aesthetic, or even her music, but there’s one thing we should all be able to agree on: her weight is none of your business.

When you describe a deadlift, the exercise sounds almost easy. All you have to do, after all, is pick up a weight from the floor, then put it back down. But as anyone who’s tried one knows, in practice, knowing how to do a deadlift exercise is pretty challenging. It’s hard to perfect your deadlift form, for one. It’s also quite the workout, as the DOMS will prove a day or two later.

To that point, when you do a deadlift, more muscles are worked than you might expect. “In a deadlift, the primary muscles used are the hamstrings, lats, glutes, erector spinae (lower back), and quads,” says Semaj Walker, a certified personal trainer based in LA. Most of the muscles engaged in a deadlift are in the posterior chain (back side) of your body, although your lats are also crucial for stabilizing the movement. “Strengthening the posterior chain helps balance out muscle development, reduces the risk of muscle imbalances, and improves overall functional strength,” Walker tells PS.

Here, more about the benefits of deadlifts and why you should add them to your strength-training program — plus, step-by-step instructions for how to do a deadlift, and how to adapt the move for your own personal fitness goals.

Benefits of Deadlifts

They’re a functional movement

Bending over to tie your shoes; cleaning the house; picking up your pup for a loving squeeze — all those daily activities require a hip hinge, a functional movement pattern that deadlifting mimics. “Having deadlifts in your training enhances your ability to perform day-to-day tasks in a safe and efficient manner,” Walker says. Trust us, you’ll see the payoff the next time you have to lift a heavy bag of groceries off the floor.

They improve posture

To perform deadlifts safely, proper spinal alignment and core engagement are necessary. That said, deadlifts, when practiced regularly, strengthen stabilizer muscles in the spine, reinforcing good posture and spinal stability. And we know, that may not sound like a big payoff. But besides the fact that your parents have been bugging you to stand up straight for years, good posture can help you perform other exercises with proper, safe form, which is a huge advantage.

They’re efficient

“Deadlifts recruit plenty of large muscle groups simultaneously which can cause the body to release growth hormones,” Walker says. It’s known as a compound exercise, and besides the fact that more muscles being recruited = a higher metabolic demand required, it also means more muscles are being strengthened at one time. Yes, that can lead to some major soreness the next day — but the strength gains are pretty major as well.

How to Do a Deadlift

Start with your bodyweight or a weight that is light enough to allow you to maintain proper form for 8 to 12 reps. Then, gradually increase the weight over time. Or, when performing multiple sets, add more weight to each set to challenge yourself.

Stand with your feet hip width apart or slightly wider, and a barbell, a kettlebell, or two dumbbells, in front of you on the floor. Your feet should be close to the weights; even under the bar, if you’re using a barbell.

Push your bottom back into a squat and hinge at the waist, bending your knees to grasp the weight in your hands.

Squeeze the shoulders together slightly to engage your lats.

Grounding your feet, pull the weight up, keeping the bar close to your body. As you come to stand, squeeze your glutes. (But avoid pushing your hips forward, arching your body.)

To lower the weight, hinge at the hips, bringing your chest forward, while tracing the front of your thighs with your weights.

As the weights pass your knees, bend your knees and continue hinging forward until the weights tap the floor.

Pro tip: Don’t skip step three! Lack of lat engagement is a common mistake people make when deadlifting, and can result in injury. Recruiting your lats will help keep your weights from drifting away from your body. Why that’s important: when the weight does drift, it sets off a whole cascade of undesirable moves that end with you shifting onto your toes and rounding your back — not good news for your body.

Deadlift Variations and Modifications

Slow Deadlift

You can add difficulty to any lift simply by slowing down. Moving at a slower rate on the eccentric (lengthening) part of an exercise will create more time under tension, or how long the muscle is being strained. In the case of a deadlift, you could slow down on the lift up or the hinge forward. Try to lengthen the movement so it spans a count of four.

Romanian Deadlift

This version of a deadlift is commonly seen among people using dumbbells instead of a barbell. A full description of how to do it is here, but you’ll start standing, holding your weights, then hinge forward to lower your weights to around knee level, stopping when you feel the stretch in your hamstrings.

Deadlift With Row

“When designing a training routine, incorporate accessory exercises such as hip thrusts and bent-over rows to strengthen key muscles involved in the deadlift. The stronger the main muscle groups recruited in a deadlift, the stronger the deadlift will be,” Walker says.

For instance, with a deadlift with row, you’ll add a bent-over row in when you’re in your hip hinge, at the “bottom” of your deadlift. Squeeze your shoulder blades together to row your weights back, then lower them and return to your standing position.

Glute Bridge

An exercise that will target some of the same muscle groups as the deadlift, but may be a better fit for some people, such as those with knee injuries, is a glute bridge. To perform a glute bridge, start by laying on your back with your feet flat on the ground. Brace the core and lift your hips until your body is in a diagonal line, then return to the starting position.

You can challenge yourself by holding a dumbbell over your pelvis while you lift up, or modify by resting your shoulders and upper body on an exercise ball while you perform the move.

The fire hydrant exercise has been around at least since the days of Jane Fonda workout tapes, but it’s not just your mama’s exercise — it’s something you should consider adding to your routine as well. Fire hydrants are a great exercise because they don’t require any equipment, but can still help you build some serious glute strength.

Fire hydrants target your gluteus medius (think the side of your butt). “This muscle can be overshadowed in training, since many people focus on their gluteus maximus, the main part of your butt”, says Domenic Angelino, a certified personal trainer with Trainer Academy. “The gluteus maximus still will experience a training effect here, but it won’t be as profound as the gluteus medius.” So, no — the fire hydrant is not a replacement for squats. But it can be a great alternative, since it works related but different muscles.

The benefit of having a strong gluteus medius is to be able to move the body in a lateral direction, or side to side. This is helpful not only for athletes who need lateral agility, but also for everyday life when you need to move out of the way quickly, like maneuvering your way through a busy airport.

Fire Hydrant Exercise Benefits

Again, the fire hydrant is an incredibly effective glute move. Here, three benefits of the lower-body exercise.

They Don’t Require Equipment

The fire hydrant is a great way to train your glutes without needing access to go to a gym. Lack of equipment can be a barrier when it comes to working out, but with the fire hydrant, all you need is your bodyweight. “This is huge, because a lot of people struggle to maintain motivation to workout consistently. Since motivation comes in waves and is transient, it’s important to have tools at your disposal to capitalize on those bursts of motivation. Having a way to workout on the spot is a great way to do this”, says Angelino. This also means you can keep up with your fitness routine anywhere.

(That said, you can up the intensity of the move by adding on an exercise band — more on that below.)

They’re Accessible

The fire hydrant is simplistic. “They’re structured in such a way that most people will be able to lift their leg up appropriately, even if only through a partial range of motion,” Angelino explains. Though you do want to use your maximum range of motion, it does not need to be a large range of motion to be effective.

They’re a Perfect Finisher

When you’ve reached the end of a workout where you’ve used heavy loads, and want to do a final burnout round to push your muscle endurance, the last thing you want to think about is lifting more heavy weight. Enter the fire hydrant. “Since they rely on a single joint, they can be tagged on to a workout after completing more challenging exercises that involve multiple joints”, Angelino tells PS.

How to Do a Fire Hydrant

Start on all fours with your wrists under your shoulders, and your knees under your hips.

Keeping the left knee on the ground, lift your right leg up, opening up the hip.

Bring your right leg up to 90 degrees, or as high as your range of motion allows while keeping your hips parallel to the floor.

Return your right leg back to the starting position.

Repeat for 10 reps.

Complete 10 reps on the left leg.

An important note is to make sure you keep your hips square to the floor and not let your torso twist. Twisting the body will start to recruit the abdominals and take away from the activation of the glutes.

Fire Hydrant Modifications and Variations

One reason trainers love fire hydrants is because they’re so adaptable. You can start with a smaller range of motion when you’re still newer to the move; or wear a resistance band to make it more challenging. Here, more info about how to modify the exercise.

Try a Clamshell

The clamshell exercise trains similar muscles to the fire hydrant, so it can be a good place to start if you’re struggling with the fire hydrant, Angelio says.

You can find the steps for performing a clamshell here. Basically, you’ll lay on your side with your hips, knees and ankles stacked. Lift your top knee, and open your hips as far as your range of motion allows, then return to the starting position.

Add a resistance band

Add a pulse

Another way to get more of a muscle burn is to add a pulse to the top of the fire hydrant movement. Raise your leg to the top of your range of motion. Then lower your leg an inch, then lift it an inch, and repeat for 10-20 reps. This creates more time under tension, which helps to build the muscle.

From the moody gym lighting to the glass refrigerators stacked with eucalyptus-infused towels, Equinox encompasses all things luxury fitness. Still, a gym with its own spa and steam room comes at a price. Equinox membership prices have fluctuated over the years, but in 2024, the exact number depends on your location, desired access, and level of commitment. For more details on Equinox gym prices and membership tiers, we took a look at Equinox prices in several major cities, cross-referencing with members on social media to see if it’s actually worth the splurge.

How Much Is a Basic Equinox Membership?

Most of the 107 Equinox clubs are split up into four basic price tiers with various benefits and levels of access, but each one requires a 12-month commitment. The Select tier costs anywhere from $220 (Austin, Texas) to $252 a month (Downtown LA), including unlimited in-person and digital classes, access to the EQX+ app, a complimentary fitness assessment, and many enviable amenities at your selected location. According to the Equinox website, new members also receive a free personal training session, a one-on-one studio Pilates session, and two guest passes, which renew annually.

How Much Is an All-Access Equinox Membership?

Moving up in price, the All-Access tier guarantees you access to over 80 clubs across the US and Canada, including your selected location. The All-Access Equinox membership is generally priced at $310, with the exception of the larger Equinox Sports Clubs, which are more expensive. Some major areas, including Boston and Southern California, also include a Regional tier, granting membership to all the clubs in the area. So for instance, access to all Equinox gyms in Boston would run you $267 a month; access to all Equinox gyms in Southern California (with the exception of the Century City location and Sports Club LA) totals $287 a month.

How Much Is an Equinox Destination Membership?

The final Equinox membership prices give you access to even more locations, aptly named the Destination membership. Excluding the Hudson Yards location in New York City and the Century City location in Los Angeles, Destination members can go to any Equinox they’d like (including the E Clubs) for $345 a month. And since we know you’re wondering: the only available membership options for the Hudson Yards and Century City locations is $405 a month, but that membership also comes with access to all Equinox clubs worldwide. This final pricing tier was formerly known as an E membership, according to Reddit users.

How Much Are Equinox Sports Clubs?

Although all Equinox locations have high standards, Equinox Sports Clubs — like the ones in Washington DC, Orange County, Los Angeles, and Boston — have even more amenities and slightly different pricing. We’re talking pickleball courts, an outdoor track, and even a rock-climbing wall.

The pricing reflects the additional services. Pricing at Sports Club Boston, for instance, begins at the monthly $267 Regional tier instead of the Select tier. On the other hand, Sports Club LA costs $295 a month and you only get access to that specific location. In Orange County, you can pay $270 a month for Sports Club access, or $287 a month for access to every Equinox in Southern CA, but Sports Club LA is not included. As a reminder, the $345 Destination membership will get you access to almost every gym, but unless you’re paying $405 a month, the Hudson Yards and Century City locations are still excluded. The Equinox website notes that you can also purchase a Day Pass for any location not included in your membership (although it does not disclose the price of the pass).

Why Is Equinox So Expensive?

The Equinox pricing discourse isn’t slowing down anytime soon. The memberships are undeniably expensive. Your gym habits will determine whether the cost is worth it to you. As some members on Reddit explain, Equinox makes more financial sense for them considering all of their previous fitness classes and memberships. Instead of paying separately for Pilates, boxing, yoga, and/or spin class, Equinox makes it easier (and in some cases, more affordable) to access a wide variety of classes in one place. The fact that it’s so luxurious is just an added bonus.

A gym should always serve you on a functional level, but at Equinox, you’re also paying for convenience. Equinox members say the gyms are typically less crowded (although this depends on the city), allowing them to get more done without navigating a busy space or waiting for equipment. Some say the general ambience and fitness-oriented community motivates them to prioritize their own goals as well. “The atmosphere in this gym is so unmatched, and you really walk out feeling 10 times better than how you felt walking in,” content creator Maggie Cooper said after trying Equinox out for herself. With space to work, healthy food, cold plunges, and saunas, Equinox really does keep the focus on wellness, and that’s something people are willing to pay for. “What’s wrong with paying premium if you’re serious about fitness?” one Redditor wrote. “Working out has saved my mental and physical health. I’m my best investment.”

Then there are the amenities. The eucalyptus towels barely scratch the surface when you consider the luxe showers lined with fresh Kiehl’s products. “It feels like getting your skin kissed by a thousand little baby water angels,” Sydni Wynter confirmed on TikTok. That’s not to mention the steam room, saunas, vanities, and pool.

But even with all the amenities in the world, not everyone is sold. “You aren’t paying for machines, you are paying for status and showering,” one user commented on Wynter’s TikTok. Others noted that while a luxury gym like Equinox might be something to aspire to, the pricing simply isn’t realistic. Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide if an Equinox membership makes sense for your lifestyle. If you’re interested in learning more, you can try a complimentary class at Equinox and get a better sense of everything the club has to offer.

Ever reached down to grab something off the floor, only to wince in pain or get stuck halfway down? If so, tight hamstrings are one of the possible culprits — and you might benefit from learning how to stretch your hamstrings.

There are several causes of tight hamstring, but the number one culprit is, you guessed it, sitting with your knees bent all day. Thankfully, performing hamstring stretch exercises can help relieve any tightness or stiffness, as well as elongate and stretch your hamstrings so that there’s less tightness in the future. After all, underuse is another cause of tight, short muscles, so a few weekly stretch sessionsare a great way to combat this.

Even the best hamstring stretches won’t have the biggest impact unless you learn how to stretch your hamstrings properly. The best way to do that: hinge from the hips as you move through a stretch, rather than arching and rounding your lower back. Since your hamstring muscles are connected directly to your pelvis, this is important for making sure you’re stretching the actual hamstring muscle, and protecting your lower back from injury.

Read on for more information about why hamstrings can get so tight, plus personal trainer’s recommendations for the best hamstring stretches. Get ready to feel sweet, sweet hamstring relief.

What Causes Tight Hamstrings?

There are a variety of things that can make your hamstrings feel tight, says Chris Gagliardi, ACE-certified personal trainer. Injury and prolonged sitting are common culprits of tight hammies, as well as immobilization after injury, faulty motor control patterns, and potential genetic predisposition.

Grace Taylor, PT, DPT adds that weaknesses from other muscles like your quads and glutes can also cause tight hamstrings, since those weak muscles force your hamstrings to work harder. Conversely, underuse can lead to shortening of the muscle fibers, which in turn leads to overall muscle tightness.

Prolonged sitting stays on the naughty list, but that doesn’t mean we can’t undo its effects on our hamstrings.

Why Is Having Flexible Hamstrings Beneficial?

“Having tight hamstrings alters the way your body moves and functions,” says Gagliardi. “The hamstrings need the ability to shorten and lengthen in order for your knees and hips to move properly.”

Tight hamstrings reduce your ability to reach the ground, which can place more stress on your back if you’re frequently bending over or lifting heavy objects, adds Taylor. As noted earlier, your hamstring muscles also attach directly to your pelvis, so if they’re tight, they can negatively influence the position of your hips and spine. Both trainers agree that this can affect your posture, and Gagliardi adds that tight hamstrings can also impair your athletic performance, particularly speed, agility, and power.

Best Hamstring Stretches

Movement is crucial for opening tight hamstrings, says Gagliardi, and so is reducing the amount of time you spend sedentary. Muscles have a tendency to tighten from overuse or from underuse, adds Taylor, so it’s beneficial to mobilize the tissues (with massage, a foam roller, massage gun) and static and dynamic stretches.

Gagliardi and Taylor provided recommendations for the best hamstring stretches, ahead. In terms of how stretch your hamstrings safely, make sure to only stretch to the point of slight discomfort. Never push past that point to where you’re feeling pain.

Static stretching is most beneficial when held for 30 seconds, and it’s better to stretch twice for 30 seconds instead once for 60 seconds, says Taylor. Both trainers recommend aiming for two to three stretch sessions per week. Keep reading to find the best hamstring stretches to incorporate into your workout routine.

I love unique pieces that you wouldn’t typically find in a traditional outdoor retail setting, and it was just so much fun to be able to truly make things in a way that speaks to us, sees us, and serves as a conversation piece on the trail or even in the streets.”

TikTok sleep routines have inspired me to do better. I spend the last few minutes of most nights mindlessly scrolling, watching creators walk through their carefully curated sleep rituals, sharing their favorite sleep products, sleep supplements, and mindfulness practices that help them doze off faster and sleep more soundly. The elaborate routines might not be entirely realistic for everyone, mostly due to the amount of time and products required, but according to sleep experts, our FYP could still teach us a thing or two about building better sleep habits.

TikTok creator Kylie Day was one of the first to go mega-viral for her extensive sleep routine, racking up 1.2 million likes, and over eight million views. “I have the most insane sleep routine that all my friends love to make fun of, but I sleep like a baby every single night,” she says in her original video. Day goes on to explain that she sprays magnesium on the bottoms of her feet, sleeps with a silk pillowcase, wraps a weighted “NodPod” around her face and eyes, and uses mouth tape before bed — all in the pursuit of better sleep.

“I have had struggles in the past with my quality of sleep. I would constantly wake up throughout the night and never wake up feeling well rested. This is what motivated me to look for ways to enhance my sleep,” Day tells PS. “Since using my sleep routine consistently, I have noticed that I can sleep 6-8 hours at night and wake up feeling so rested and able to have stable energy levels all day, while before, I could sleep 12 hours and be tired all day long.”

Since starting her own sleep routine, TikTok creator Julia Iz has also noticed a significant improvement in the quality of her sleep. “Ever since I can remember, I have had trouble sleeping, especially if I’m sleeping away from home,” she tells PS. “I am a sensitive sleeper so I’m very particular about my environment.” To help stay asleep, Iz does a nighttime meditation before bed, and wears eye masks and ear plugs to block out any light or sound. “I like to meditate or listen to binaural beats for about 30 minutes before drifting off into sleep,” she says, calling this the best part of her sleep routine.

Iz also limits exposure to blue light about an hour before bed (which can potentially suppress melatonin production and throw off your circadian rhythm, according to Harvard Medical School) and takes magnesium glycinate most nights. Since tracking her sleep with the Oura ring, Iz says her REM and deep sleep levels have increased. “As a result, I feel more energized throughout the day and my cortisol levels have balanced out.” But what do experts have to say about these multi-step, multi-product sleep routines?

Are TikTok Sleep Routines Legit?

When it comes to creating a solid sleep routine, Jade Wu, PhD, DBSM and Chris Winter, MD (both Mattress Firm sleep advisors), have some advice. “Falling asleep is less like turning off a switch and more like going down a ramp,” Dr. Wu says. “Your body needs a gradual wind down — including decreasing body temperature, slowing heart rate, relaxing muscles, quieting mental activity etc. — to prepare for good quality sleep. A good sleep routine can help with all of this.”

That said, don’t let social media get to you — you don’t necessarily need a million products to unwind. “It doesn’t have to be elaborate. In fact, too many specific steps done with too much perfectionism may be counterproductive,” Dr. Wu says. “We don’t want to send a message to our bodies that sleep is something tricky or daunting.”

To keep your sleep routine simple, Dr. Winter says the most important things to think about are consistency, duration, and optimized timing. “We want a predictable sleep and wake time (particularly wake time), and we need the routine to provide the proper amount of sleep for each individual at that particular time of their life,” Dr. Winter says. “For better or for worse, great sleep habits are pretty boring, stuff you have probably heard before, and not likely to go viral.”

That said, when it comes to two of the most popular sleep routine products, including magnesium supplements and mouth tape, the sleep experts shared their thoughts. “Brains love magnesium, and the mineral is a common co-factor in many processes that generate healthy amounts of brain neurotransmitters,” Dr. Winter says. “Having your magnesium levels tested and supplementing can be a big step in a healthier sleep and health direction.” That said, it’s best to consult a healthcare provider before incorporating any new medications into your life. Mouth tape also comes with a bit of a warning from the experts. “Generally, we want to keep as many avenues for respiration open as possible, so to shut off one major source of breathing doesn’t seem wise,” Dr. Wu says. Dr. Winter adds that, while mouth tape may help with snoring and mild sleep apnea, the scientific data is still pretty scarce.

What’s more, while a dedicated sleep routine can make a difference, you can also work on sleep quality throughout the day by thinking about your diet, exercise, stress, and alcohol consumption. Healthy eating habits can contribute to healthier sleep patterns, with high-fiber fruits and vegetables, easily digestible carbohydrates, and foods with high levels of vitamin B (such as eggs, leafy greens, yogurt, and salmon) proving helpful for melatonin regulation and overall better sleep, per the National Sleep Foundation. Limiting alcohol before bed can also allow for deeper sleep, since you don’t have to worry about the sedative effects wearing off and disrupting your rest. This can also decrease your risk of sleep apnea, sleep walking, and vivid dreams or nightmares, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Even simple lifestyle changes like prioritizing stress relief or getting less screen time before bed can be a hugely beneficial part of your long-term sleep routine. What you do day-to-day might just prove to be more important than the 30-minute routine you do right before bed.

The Bottom Line

TikTok sleep routines can be a great place to draw inspiration, but getting better ZZZ’s doesn’t have to be complicated. If you’re looking to revamp your sleep habits make sure to run any new supplements by a healthcare professional and be wary of short-lived trends. To simplify all the sleep routine content, Dr. Wu recommends picking a few calming rituals you genuinely enjoy (including music, meditation, and dog-cuddling). You can try to do them every evening before bed and see how they work, “but don’t sweat it if sometimes you have to or want to do something different,” Dr. Wu says. “Think of this routine as a transition from ‘doing’ mode to ‘being’ mode.” And remember — for a truly great sleep routine, maintaining a balanced lifestyle is key.

Bringing a new baby into the world is full of new experiences, and parents who are breastfeeding have their own unique challenges, including potentially having to figure out how to treat mastitis.

Mastitis refers to an inflammation of the breast, according to the La Leche League International. The condition is relatively common, occurring in one-third of postpartum people, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. It happens most often before the baby is 3 months of age, the journal the American Family Physician states, although it can happen at any time during one’s breastfeeding journey.

Mastitis can occur with or without an infection, but either way, it can cause breast pain and uncomfortable swelling, and even flu-like symptoms, like a fever. It’s so miserable that it’s one of the top reasons people stop breastfeeding earlier than they initially intended. That’s why it’s important to know how to treat mastitis, including early signs of mastitis, when you can treat mastitis at home, and when you need antibiotics for mastitis.

But the treatment protocol for mastitis recently changed. In 2022, the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine (ABM) published new guidelines on mastitis management, and they represent a pretty big shift from how mastitis used to be treated. Here, everything you need to know about the early signs of mastitis and how to get rid of mastitis fast.

What Are the Early Signs of Mastitis?

Engorgement, or the feeling that the breasts are uncomfortably full and heavy, or even hard, is an early red flag of mastitis. Other warning signs typcially include a tender, reddish area of the breast, Chrisie Rosenthal, an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and director of clinical resources at The Lactation Network, tells PS.

The La Leche League International notes that an area of your breast may also look “pink, brown, or gray” depending on “your skin tone and which part of the breast is inflamed.” The discolored area may be “triangular” or “wedge” shaped. However, the organization notes that skin changes don’t have to be present for you to have mastitis.

If the mastitis develops, you may also experience “flu-like symptoms including fever, chills, aches, and fatigue,” says Rosenthal.

What Causes Mastitis?

The causes of mastitis vary. It tends to occur when a breastfeeding person is experiencing “infrequent or inefficient milk removal,” and is especially likely if they also have an oversupply (which means they’re producing more breast milk than their infant is eating), Rosenthal says.

If a breastfeeding person isn’t nursing or pumping often enough to remove milk, their breast can become engorged and the pressure can cause the milk ducts to narrow, leading to what’s known as inflammatory mastitis. This can then lead to an infection developing, known as bacterial mastitis.

This is a relatively new understanding of the condition. Previously, you often heard people talk about “clogged ducts.” Now, it’s thought that mastitis is the result of inflammation, not clogs.

How to Treat Mastitis

As mentioned, the treatment protocol for mastitis recently changed. Now, the goal is to treat the inflammation that causes mastitis, rather than to loosen or dislodge a “clog.”

It’s best to talk to your doctor if you suspect you may be at risk of mastitis, but the ABM Clinical Protocol #36 lays out the following advice for how to treat mastitis:

First, be aware of the early signs of mastitis and work fast if you think you may be at risk of developing the condition.”Prompt and effective treatment will halt progression in the spectrum. Many of these measures provide not only treatment but prevention as well,” the Protocol states.

If you’re experiencing pain or swelling in the breasts, use ice to try to bring it down. You can also ask your doctor if it’s safe for you to take over-the-counter anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen.

Avoid applying heat, and do not massage the breasts, as both things can worsen inflammation. (Warm showers are fine if they feel nice, but they won’t help treat the mastitis.)

Nurse your child on demand. It’s safe to do so even if you develop bacterial mastitis. Don’t aim to “empty” the breasts; there’s no need to follow a nursing session with pumping, and in fact, the ABM guidelines call for reducing pump usage in general, since over-pumping can contribute to an oversupply. (If you’re exclusively pumping, you can ask your doctor about the right strategy for you.)

Taking 5 to 10 g of sunflower or soy lecithin daily can help reduce duct inflammation and may prevent mastitis. The ABM guidelines also name probiotics as a way of potentially reducing the risk of mastitis, though more research is needed to say for sure how helpful the good bacteria are.

Are Antibiotics Necessary to Treat Mastitis?

Not always. If you have inflammatory mastitis, using antibiotics “disrupts the breast microbiome and increases the risk of progression to bacterial mastitis,” the ABM Protocol states. “Prophylactic antibiotics have not been shown to be effective in the prevention of mastitis.”

But if you have bacterial mastitis, antibiotics are often necessary. So it’s essential to see your care provider if you suspect mastitis, Rosenthal says.

It’s especially important to see your doctor if you develop a fever or rapid heart rate, she adds. But in general, it’s best to talk to your doctor early to get their recommendations for how to treat mastitis — the condition can progress quickly, so you want to act fast.

As a health editor, I get heaps of wellness pitches each day — most of which claim to offer the latest and greatest methods for a better, healthier you. Some of it works (like walking backwards) and some of it’s iffy (looking at you, sexy water).

Over the last few years, the theme I can’t seem to escape, however, is Scandinavian wellness. From trends like hygge and the Scandi sleep method to the ever-popular Nordic trend of cold plunging, Scandinavian wellness trends continue to be touted as elixirs for overall health and wellbeing.

When I got the opportunity to try a few out for myself in Sweden alongside Volvo, I jumped at the opportunity. The car brand is headquartered in Gothenburg and invited a few editors to test out some of the most popular Nordic health trends, as well as their first fully electric vehicle, the EX30, which is inspired by Scandinavian lifestyle and wellness.

Scandinavian culture prioritizes simplicity, alongside deep and meaningful connection to nature. It promotes several feel-good philosophies and rituals, all of which center on being slower, more mindful human beings. I spent four days in Sweden putting a few of them to the test and shared my honest thoughts below.

Gökotta

Prior to this trip, I thought my morning ritual was pretty decent: wake up, check my phone for 10 minutes, turn on “Good Morning America” in the living room, and then work out alongside the 8 to 9 a.m. segment before showering, eating breakfast, and starting my day. Then, I tried gökotta.

Gökotta is a Swedish wake-up ritual that centers on the act of rising at dawn to hear the birds sing and appreciate nature. Unlike common U.S.-based wake-up rituals that focus on achieving a packed to-do list (aka the 5-to-9 before my 9-to-5), gökotta isn’t about productivity, but about prioritizing stillness and peace before the day begins.

Given that our stays were in nature, first at the Tree Hotel and then at the Arctic Bath, I tested out gökotta each morning, taking time to prioritize nature. I woke up around 5:45 a.m., got outside, and literally listened to the birds. At the Tree Hotel I did so while hiking a nearby path in the woods, and at the Arctic Bath House I meditated on the back porch of my floating home. I found something extremely peaceful about taking in fresh air and pausing for dedicated moments of stillness before the world around me seemed awake. It brought about a sense of mental clarity and accomplishment to my day. Before I was overwhelmed with notifications, to-do lists, and other obligations, I was able to take my morning in stride — something that I haven’t allowed myself the pleasure of in years.

Cold Bathing

In recent years, cold plunging has become popular across the US as a means to help reduce inflammation, boost immune function, decrease levels of pain, and increase alertness and energy. However, it has roots in Scandinavian culture dating back centuries. Prior to this trip, I’d been cold plunging only once at a local spa in Brooklyn. I lasted milliseconds. This time, I had the opportunity at the Arctic Bath House to cold plunge outdoors, miles south of the Arctic Circle. I geared up beforehand, wrapping my hair in a bun and tucking it in under the fleece-lined hat. Prior to jumping in we heated up in the sauna, mentally and physically preparing for the challenge ahead.

When it was my turn, I shuffled out of the sauna and quickly backed myself down the ladder and into the outdoor ice bath, taking deep breaths to regulate. I lasted about 10 seconds in the water, set to a cool 39 degrees Fahrenheit. While this isn’t record time by any means, my body did quickly feel the effects afterward: a warm tingling sensation followed by an increase in energy and a great night’s sleep.

Slow Travel

When it comes to traveling in Sweden, less is more and slow is better. The concept of slow travel emphasizes the notion of taking time to appreciate the natural beauty of your surroundings rather than rushing to see everything. During our stay we were able to slow travel through Harads and Lulea, in Volvo’s EX30, which has a panoramic roof and helped me feel a little closer to nature while driving.

Rather than sticking to the highways to get from point A to point B, we hit the backroads. The trip itinerary also included stops at landmarks and scenic overlooks along the way, with the intention of allowing us to enjoy the journey and not just focus on the destination. At one such stop, I was able to take in one of Sweden’s most enjoyable traditions, fika (aka the Swedish coffee break) while overlooking the scenic mountain views of Boden. We also visited the Gammelstad Church Town, one of the biggest and best-preserved church towns in the world.

Admittedly, my driving partner and I got lost once, a risk you take when it comes to slow travel. But even in a place we’d never been before, it didn’t feel overwhelming. We found ourselves surrounded by soaring spruce trees, pointing out the tiny homes we’d live in if we never left. Sure, the landscape may have been making us feel extra zen. But because we weren’t trying to stick to a strict time table, it also didn’t matter if we took a slightly longer-than-planned detour.

The Bottom Line

Scandinavian wellness is onto something. There’s a reason Nordic countries are ranked some of the happiest on earth. The calm and introspection I felt while there was refreshing and a welcomed change from the concrete jungle. While I’m not sure I’ll be able to fully re-create that energy in New York (I can see the pigeons already messing up my gökotta), that won’t stop me from trying.

With so many ways to exercise, and so many things to focus your workouts on (leg day, fixing back pain, stronger arms, etc.), mobility is easy to overlook when planning your workouts. However, it’s key for your overall health, fitness, and movement — particularly when it comes to your hips.

“If your body was a house, the hips and pelvic girdle would be the foundation,” says Grace Taylor, PT, DPT. “Without a strong, proper foundation, the rest of the house collapses.” Strong hips reduce stress and strain on other joints in your body, ensure proper alignment and posture, and improve your body awareness. When someone lacks mobility in their hips, they have to find that missing movement or function in other areas of their body, which leads to undue stress on the body. That’s why hip mobility exercises are so important.

Araceli de Leon, MS, RYT 500, ACE-PT echoes this sentiment. Mobility of any joint is important because our kinetic chain is connected, and one misalignment or issue will be compensated by another, de Leon explains. Restricted or decreased range of motion can lead to imbalances in the body, in the hip, it can lead to a change in walking or running pattern, posture, issues in the lower back/lumbar spine or legs, or higher risk factors for injuries. “Healthy hip mobility isn’t just important for athletes and active people; it’s crucial for everyday life,” de Leon tells PS.

Causes of Poor Hip Mobility

Tightness in the hip joint can come from reduced muscle length or muscle tightness surrounding the joint, reduced strength and stability, or injury to passive structures that provide joint stability and appropriate positioning, says Grace.

The muscles in our hip area work together to give the hip proper joint mobility. However, when a few of those muscles are doing most of the work, the other muscles might become underactive, weak, lengthened, and tight, says de Leon. On the same note, overactive muscles become shortened and tight. Thus, poor hip mobility is generally a result of an imbalance in the muscles working in the hip region. These imbalances can happen from too much sitting or standing, working conditions like favoring carrying loads on one side of the body, or ignoring proper warm up and cool down in your workout routines.

One thing to note is that reduced hip mobility doesn’t always mean you have tight hip muscles, says de Leon. Often, the issue is partnered with weak or underutilized hip muscles. Even if you lift weights frequently, some people forget about strengthening the smaller, underactive muscles of the hips, like the gluteus medius, tensor fascia lata, or adductor muscles. Another way to improve hip mobility is to include exercises that strengthen these smaller stabilizer muscles, not just the gluteus maximus.

How Fast Can You Increase Hip Mobility?

The most important determinant in improving hip mobility is consistency, says de Leon. The key is to focus on a program that works for your schedule, lifestyle and goals, and is safe for your body. Generally, with a consistent routine, you’ll start to notice some changes after 3-4 weeks of consistent stretching and mobility; and more substantial changes after 8-12 weeks, says Taylor.

Best Hip Mobility Exercises

To avoid or unlock tight hips, Taylor recommends moving frequently, avoiding prolonged positions like sitting, stretching your hips three times a week, and strengthening your hip, both the large musculature such as the hip flexor and glutes, as well as stability muscles. Ahead, we had de Leon and Taylor for their favorite hip mobility exercises to get you started.
